Over the weekend we had our showpiece event of the season with our National Learning Disability Basketball Development Event 2018. Over 70 basketball players with a learning disability made their way up to the National Basketball Performance Centre in Manchester for an action packed day of basketball fun!

The aim of these development events are not to get teams in to compete and chase wins, but to act as a stepping stone into future events competition for our players with a learning disability. For many of these players coming to such a big venue surrounding by so many people is often a lot to ask, so we want these players to come in and enjoy themselves.

The event itself would not have been as much of a success without some key organisations of which we need to give a huge shout out to. Firstly Basketball England who were so accommodating with us for this event and to allow us to host the event in the National Basketball Performance Centre makes this such an experience for our players. Secondly and certainly by no means least, Dynamik Sports Flooring who for the second year running have continued to support this event and our development of Learning Disability Basketball in the UK. We look forward to more collaborative work future seasons!

On 28th July we will be hosting a National Learning Disability Basketball Development Event in the National Basketball Performance Centre, Manchester.

The purpose of the event is to provide an opportunity for participants to take part in basketball matches at a level appropriate to them. They will be experiencing this in a relaxed competition in a fun and safe environment. For some this may be their first competitive environment. We have Manchester Magic and Manchester Mystics players and coaches helping us run the event. Participants are traveling from as far as Wales to participate in the friendly, fun tournament.

As a non-profit organisation it is important that we receive financial support from sponsors. We will also be running a raffle to help generate income.

This year our main event support has been kindly provided by DYNAMIK, we are truly grateful for their support.

If you would like to help this event thrive, please support this event or provide raffle prizes to support adults with learning difficulties. In return to support we will promote your business on social media and create an appreciation blog on our website. Please contact us at jacob@dosportuk.co.uk

Sunday saw our players from Glossop Town Gladiators, Chesterfield Sabres, and Derby Warriors come together for another action packed day of basketball! The three clubs, run through DOSportUK, affiliate to Special Olympics Derbyshire and the network is proud to boast a wealth of basketball talent.

For our training events SO Derbyshire players are split into three groups for a morning of training, in preparation of welcoming basketball players from Sheffield to compete in the afternoon. The morning saw each of the three groups take part in coaching sessions lead by the Derbyshire coaching staff and volunteers and a session based around the Special Olympics Fit 5 programme.

Fit5 is a fitness resource that provides tips and information for athletes, parents, coaches, partners and other supporters to lead a healthy lifestyle through physical activity, nutrition, and hydration. The session was lead by Special Olympics Athlete leaders Kiera Byland and Niall Guite. Our Derbyshire players really enjoyed the session and hopefully took home some lessons around a healthy lifestyle! Many thanks to Kiera and Niall for taking the time in working with our basketball players!

Our training this time around was based around fundamental basketball skills, enjoyment, and sessions around attacking and defensive work. We were able to showcase what we had learnt in a full afternoon of competition against a groups of Special Olympics Basketball players from Sheffield. Thanks to all up in Sheffield who made the short journey and we look forward to hosting you again!

Special Olympics Derbyshire will be hosting the next training event on Sunday July 1st and are excited to be welcoming Toby Perkins the MP for Chesterfield down to meet the players.

On Saturday 2nd December DOSportUK hosted their first ever Learning Disability Event in partnership with Special Olympics GB. The event was supported by sports flooring experts Dynamik Sport Floors, and saw over 70 players with a learning disability take part. We cannot thank Dynamik enough for their support of the event. Dynamik are fully behind the development of learning disability basketball in the UK and continue to be a great asset to the sport.

Unlike traditional competitions and events, player here were placed into completely new teams based on player rating forms and team divisions made to ensure each player competes at the right level. Each team had a minimum of 2 competitive fixtures and took part in skill challenges throughout the day.

Players were also treated to a 30 minute coaching session by players and coaches of the three big basketball clubs in Manchester. We had Manchester Magic, Manchester Giants, and Manchester Mystics all in attendance showing their support for learning disability basketball. A huge thank you to all three clubs who we hope to work closely with in the future.

Overall the event was a huge success and we are already excited to start planning for next 2018 event! Here are a few quotes from the day.

Sam Jackson a player from Glossop Town Gladiators: “I really enjoyed the event, it was fantastic. I really liked the training with the Manchester Magic coaches”

Colin Dunlop a volunteer coach at Chesterfield Sabres: “It was absolutely amazing to coach some of our Chesterfield players today. It was great to see the players playing in a competition environment outside of training and see all of the effort and enjoyment from all players”
